Volunteering

If you're interested in volunteering either at the rescue in a hands on role, or in other ways such as helping at events, fundraising etc please use the link below to download our volunteering forms. Once the forms have been returned we can arrange training. Please see below for an outline of the roles available.

Due to the nature of the hands on Hedgehog work we can only offer those roles to anyone over the age of 21. Volunteers need to be able to work alone once fully trained and also as part of a team.

We can offer events and fundraising roles to anyone over the age of 16, this can include helping at Open Days and stalls.

We do need a regular commitment for the hands on roles in caring for the hedgehogs to ensure we always have enough cover, especially during our busier times. We ask for a minimum commitment of 1 shift per week for a minimum of 42 weeks of the year

We are unable to accept Duke of Edinburgh placements or work experience that is for a week or 2 weeks at a time due to the hours the rescue is manned.

The only placements we can accept are for a morning (9am - 1pm) on a weekly basis.

Once you have completed your volunteer form it can be returned to us by email to volunteers@brockworthhedgehogrescue.co.uk or to our postal address at the bottom of this page.

Frequently asked questions

A large percentage of the hedgehogs we have brought to us are returned to the garden they were found in, the guidelines from the British Hedgehog Preservation Society state that hedgehogs should be returned back to where they came from where possible.

We will only release hedgehogs where there is already an existing population, which is within the guidelines set out by the BHPS, if there is not a population there will be a reason for that.

When feeding in the garden we must remember that this is support feeding, we are not trying to replace their natural feeding.

We recommend feeding the following

Meaty Cat food

Cat Biscuits

Specialist meat based hedgehog food such as Brambles or Vale Hedgehog Food

A shallow bowl of water

Mealworms

Peanuts

Sunflower Hearts,

Dried Fruit

Eggs

Cooked / Raw meat

Processed foods such as cakes etc

The foods that are listed to avoid are due to the effects they can have on the health of the hedgehog
